Originally published on YouTube by John van der Touw. Watch the original: https://youtube.com/watch?v=ulFN4RSLeSw Collected as part of the Queensland croquet video library — an ad-free archive of croquet content from across the web. — A hoop was run in a game with a ball in the jaws of the hoop with another ball behind the hoop - very close but slightly to the side. The two balls travelled about the same distance, and the angle of separation was about 50 degrees. Normally that would indicate that a double tap had occurred, but the referee called the stroke clean because they thought it was likely that the angle had been narrowed by the ball deflecting off a hoop upright. The stroke was not filmed but this slow-motion video shows a re-enactment with the balls in the same initial positions and played in a similar fashion. The video shows that there was a defection off the upright and, although faint, was enough to change the direction of the striker's ball by about 15 degrees. This changed the angle of separation from a “safe” 65 degrees to a suspicious 50 degrees. This suggests that the referee probably made the right decision in calling the stroke not a double tap.
