This animation examines the use of the Pilot Ball. It is important to visualise the entire turn and decide which ball will serve as the Pilot before the first roquet is played. This decision will guide the planning of the whole turn.</video:description><video:content_loc>https://pub-a5fedaee5bd34fc2b50d87b805ce2f28.r2.dev/web-videos/e50f2736-8aa2-4064-a395-48f6395a5929-1080.mp4</video:content_loc><video:player_loc>https://tv.croquetwade.com/videos/embed/gFYnZArEmiDsNP5EASdRVD</video:player_loc><video:duration>134</video:duration><video:rating>0</video:rating><video:view_count>0</video:view_count><video:publication_date>2026-05-09T18:44:20.806Z</video:publication_date><video:family_friendly>YES</video:family_friendly><video:uploader info="https://tv.croquetwade.com/c/root_channel/videos">Croquet Association of Queensland</video:uploader><video:live>NO</video:live></video:video></url><url><loc>https://tv.croquetwade.com/w/crDcwjyv5CEMPQEroCaBxQ</loc><video:video><video:thumbnail_loc>https://tv.croquetwade.com/lazy-static/thumbnails/02fb65f5-452d-42c4-ab18-799d6868c010.jpg</video:thumbnail_loc><video:title>Croquet Rules</video:title><video:description>Originally published on YouTube by Wood Mallets.

A hoop was run in a game with a ball in the jaws of the hoop with another ball behind the hoop - very close but slightly to the side. The two balls travelled about the same distance, and the angle of separation was about 50 degrees. Normally that would indicate that a double tap had occurred, but the referee called the stroke clean because they thought it was likely that the angle had been narrowed by the ball deflecting off a hoop upright. The stroke was not filmed but this slow-motion video shows a re-enactment with the balls in the same initial positions and played in a similar fashion. The video shows that there was a defection off the upright and, although faint, was enough to change the direction of the striker's ball by about 15 degrees. This changed the angle of separation from a “safe” 65 degrees to a suspicious 50 degrees. This suggests that the referee probably made the right decision in calling the stroke not a double tap.</video:description><video:content_loc>https://pub-a5fedaee5bd34fc2b50d87b805ce2f28.r2.dev/web-videos/bc8a3a08-99fc-410f-8c79-f51f32fa14cb-1080.mp4</video:content_loc><video:player_loc>https://tv.croquetwade.com/videos/embed/pLzD5UFsPy1Fj1B2UqFWiT</video:player_loc><video:duration>36</video:duration><video:rating>0</video:rating><video:view_count>0</video:view_count><video:publication_date>2026-05-09T19:23:28.511Z</video:publication_date><video:family_friendly>YES</video:family_friendly><video:uploader info="https://tv.croquetwade.com/c/root_channel/videos">Croquet Association of Queensland</video:uploader><video:live>NO</video:live></video:video></url><url><loc>https://tv.croquetwade.com/w/mqgdZ8aQaebZz1AnLLEwFF</loc><video:video><video:thumbnail_loc>https://tv.croquetwade.com/lazy-static/thumbnails/3760fe67-76ea-493b-95dd-43b0fba31d5c.jpg</video:thumbnail_loc><video:title>The Rush</video:title><video:description>Originally published on YouTube by John Hutchison.

The rush is simply a shot which hits another ball to a specific position. Careful positioning beforehand is crucial so that the hit is not a cut rush. Having to cut a ball too much can be dangerous. People have been known to miss the ball entirely!

One from the archives - From 2001, the World Singles Croquet Championship

Forget everything that you may have heard about croquet. It is not all cucumber sandwiches with the crusts off; more like a highly tactical war with the gloves off. Forget too, all the claptrap about the game only being played by elderly buffers on the vicarage lawn. It is no longer British Raj, long cool Pimms and peppery Colonels.

Rather like golf used to be, croquet is perceived as a game for the elite, not the masses. Like all games, croquet is simple when reduced to its most basic. It consists of a lawn measuring 35 yards by 28, six hoops, four flags, and one peg that stands in the middle of the six hoops.

All the players need knowledge of angles much the same as those needed to play snooker or billiards along with the strategic elements of chess. And like so many other sports when played at the highest level, it takes just one mistake to expose the jugular to your unforgiving opponent.

64 of the Worlds top players descend upon the Hurlingham Club in South London for the singles World Championships. Like the Olympics, the event happens every four years. The week-long championships are played over several venues, with the final providing an enthralling climax with South African Reg Bamford retaining his crown.

This animation investigates the idea that it is best to plan ahead, and think through the route to the next hoop, before roqueting your first ball.
In this example RED is the striker ball and has a clear rush to Hoop 1. To make a break of many hoops from this position a plan needs to be made of what will happen after Hoop 1. In other words, a pioneer (Yellow) should be sent to Hoop 3, the Black Ball then sent over to the Blue Ball which in turn will be sent to Hoop 2 to help us make that hoop.
The example suggests that it is better to use all the balls if possible as you move from hoop to hoop, as this will make running the next hoop more assured.</video:description><video:content_loc>https://pub-a5fedaee5bd34fc2b50d87b805ce2f28.r2.dev/web-videos/7dce063c-3c39-4977-be03-327dde3cffd5-1080.mp4</video:content_loc><video:player_loc>https://tv.croquetwade.com/videos/embed/rUvstp4tG6Dxup6BA5ZGEj</video:player_loc><video:duration>144</video:duration><video:rating>0</video:rating><video:view_count>0</video:view_count><video:publication_date>2026-05-09T19:36:37.531Z</video:publication_date><video:family_friendly>YES</video:family_friendly><video:uploader info="https://tv.croquetwade.com/c/root_channel/videos">Croquet Association of Queensland</video:uploader><video:live>NO</video:live></video:video></url><url><loc>https://tv.croquetwade.com/w/4wV9K8zZixbP9PDPcskJwk</loc><video:video><video:thumbnail_loc>https://tv.croquetwade.com/lazy-static/thumbnails/d41a8a60-904e-4106-8faf-4110b21541d6.jpg</video:thumbnail_loc><video:title>Golf Croquet World Championships</video:title><video:description>Originally published on YouTube by Britclip.

Golf Croquet is played between two sides — the blue and black balls versus the red and yellow balls. In singles each player plays two balls; in doubles, each player plays the same ball throughout the game. The object is to be the first side to score seven points.

Here's how to play.

Golf croquet is played on a court identical to the Association and USCA games. The equipment is the same as well, except for the lack of clips to track the next hoop. This is because of golf croquet's primary trait; everyone is playing for the same hoop. It is played as doubles or singles but always with 4 balls in a game. In a singles game, one player plays the blue &amp; black balls while their opponent plays the red &amp; yellow balls.

The game begins with a coin toss. The winner of the toss will play the blue &amp; black. Play begins with the first player shooting the blue ball toward hoop #1 from corner #4 (yellow flag). Order of play is determined by the color order on the winning stake, ie: blue - red - black - yellow.

All balls are shooting for #1 hoop. The first ball to score the hoop earns the point. Then everyone, in turn, shoots, from where their balls lie, for hoop #2 and play continues with the point earned by the player who first scores the hoop.

During each turn, the striker's ball may be hit once only. There are no additional strokes earned for hitting another ball or for scoring a hoop. When any ball comes to rest beyond the boundary line, they are placed on the boundary line where it went of the court.</video:description><video:content_loc>https://pub-a5fedaee5bd34fc2b50d87b805ce2f28.r2.dev/web-videos/eae0a1cf-b5bd-489a-813d-31ebbe60142f-480.mp4</video:content_loc><video:player_loc>https://tv.croquetwade.com/videos/embed/4wV9K8zZixbP9PDPcskJwk</video:player_loc><video:duration>217</video:duration><video:rating>0</video:rating><video:view_count>0</video:view_count><video:publication_date>2026-05-09T19:38:36.630Z</video:publication_date><video:family_friendly>YES</video:family_friendly><video:uploader info="https://tv.croquetwade.com/c/root_channel/videos">Croquet Association of Queensland</video:uploader><video:live>NO</video:live></video:video></url><url><loc>https://tv.croquetwade.com/w/6n3RVmJENnXVDnAUAdraJz</loc><video:video><video:thumbnail_loc>https://tv.croquetwade.com/lazy-static/thumbnails/16f53496-ab83-4f31-b8b5-63e49d9de3f4.jpg</video:thumbnail_loc><video:title>Croquet - Golf Croquet Clearance Shots</video:title><video:description>Originally published on YouTube by Bob Kroeger.

Croquet strokes played with the striker's ball behind the hoop and very close to an upright. In each case the player was trying to get the striker's ball through the hoop and on to the playing side with the stroke. Sometimes he succeeded in getting the ball there and sometimes he didn't. Sometimes it was a clean stroke and sometimes a fault. But in NONE of the strokes did a hoop crush fault occur.</video:description><video:content_loc>https://pub-a5fedaee5bd34fc2b50d87b805ce2f28.r2.dev/web-videos/a1c9c501-49a5-4014-9a92-45218f50467e-720.mp4</video:content_loc><video:player_loc>https://tv.croquetwade.com/videos/embed/ieJCHRxzw3jxxuHSLsARV6</video:player_loc><video:duration>279</video:duration><video:rating>0</video:rating><video:view_count>0</video:view_count><video:publication_date>2026-05-09T19:45:54.832Z</video:publication_date><video:family_friendly>YES</video:family_friendly><video:uploader info="https://tv.croquetwade.com/c/root_channel/videos">Croquet Association of Queensland</video:uploader><video:live>NO</video:live></video:video></url><url><loc>https://tv.croquetwade.com/w/1GNeonXrUsr4rBi4nnvFQx</loc><video:video><video:thumbnail_loc>https://tv.croquetwade.com/lazy-static/thumbnails/0fdec2e5-9281-4a92-a783-fedde03059e2.jpg</video:thumbnail_loc><video:title>Croquet: Simon Hockey angled wire shots</video:title><video:description>Originally published on YouTube by James Temlett.

Members of Victoria’s most far-flung croquet associations have gathered to celebrate the clubs 90th anniversary despite the significant challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Wimmera Croquet Association was established in 1930 and once boasted 14 clubs – however now has only four with about 100 members.

With no money coming in during the lockdowns – as well as the ever-present challenge of attracting younger Australians to the game – the association struggled throughout the pandemic.

Some members revealed being unable to play the game throughout the pandemic also took a toll on their mental health.</video:description><video:content_loc>https://pub-a5fedaee5bd34fc2b50d87b805ce2f28.r2.dev/web-videos/4ced0db8-5ee9-485d-94db-310cc77e468c-480.mp4</video:content_loc><video:player_loc>https://tv.croquetwade.com/videos/embed/m8eMpauhYUGEc7zj6f6CpF</video:player_loc><video:duration>147</video:duration><video:rating>0</video:rating><video:view_count>0</video:view_count><video:publication_date>2026-05-09T19:57:54.160Z</video:publication_date><video:family_friendly>YES</video:family_friendly><video:uploader info="https://tv.croquetwade.com/c/root_channel/videos">Croquet Association of Queensland</video:uploader><video:live>NO</video:live></video:video></url><url><loc>https://tv.croquetwade.com/w/uBt7A9E8tBjmnrUmxaMRFx</loc><video:video><video:thumbnail_loc>https://tv.croquetwade.com/lazy-static/thumbnails/0190b696-263f-49ca-9662-000c6201606e.jpg</video:thumbnail_loc><video:title>Roll Shots for Association Croquet</video:title><video:description>Originally published on YouTube by John Hutchison.

It’s good to be a sports fan in the Palm Beaches. Did you know there’s even one perfect week in February where five amazing spectator sports converge? It’s called The Perfect Week of Sports. But you can also enjoy sporting events year-round. The National Croquet Center in West Palm Beach offers free lessons on Saturdays and is an inviting and serene place for the whole family. You can cool it on the veranda with food and drink or try your hand at the game.

This video shows an aggressive hoop shot with the ball close to the hoop. Two real time examples back to back are followed by two "less than robust" slow motion examples followed by (at 16seconds in) a nearly 2.5 minute slow motion example of the one shot. This video has ghosting and my spin on this (pun intended) is that if you follow
either the leading edge of the ghost image or 2) the trailing edge of the ghost image or 3) the non ghosted or much less ghosted solid image of the mallet and ball you may be able to make a more accurate ruling on this shot. Carbon paper was used in this and I will state upfront that it showed a blurred image when we looked at it - much different than the print we saw in a clean single ball shot. This shot was hit at or near the horizontal axis of the ball. I will be curious to see how NB subscribers rule on this.</video:description><video:content_loc>https://pub-a5fedaee5bd34fc2b50d87b805ce2f28.r2.dev/web-videos/bde07005-545f-4d74-a0ad-e3bb16fd0088-480.mp4</video:content_loc><video:player_loc>https://tv.croquetwade.com/videos/embed/ivEYeWH9gvTxs97k5ggis5</video:player_loc><video:duration>173</video:duration><video:rating>0</video:rating><video:view_count>0</video:view_count><video:publication_date>2026-05-09T20:28:25.039Z</video:publication_date><video:family_friendly>YES</video:family_friendly><video:uploader info="https://tv.croquetwade.com/c/root_channel/videos">Croquet Association of Queensland</video:uploader><video:live>NO</video:live></video:video></url><url><loc>https://tv.croquetwade.com/w/hk8jRainn6kF6BXrvpN2n1</loc><video:video><video:thumbnail_loc>https://tv.croquetwade.com/lazy-static/thumbnails/6d9d87c6-5215-43c1-b3d4-ca0c11842c2f.jpg</video:thumbnail_loc><video:title>Croquet - Series E Hammer Shots</video:title><video:description>Originally published on YouTube by Bob Kroeger.
